Ecommerce Website Checklist: Everything to Check Before You Launch

Aug 16, 2026 · 7 min read
Launching an ecommerce store is exciting, but a rushed launch can quietly cost you sales and customer trust in the first critical weeks. Here's what to check before you go live.

**Product pages are complete and accurate.** Every product should have clear photos from multiple angles, accurate descriptions, correct pricing, and current stock information. Missing details are one of the biggest reasons visitors abandon a purchase.

**Checkout works flawlessly, on mobile too.** Test the entire purchase flow yourself, from adding an item to cart through to order confirmation — on both desktop and mobile. A single broken step in checkout can silently cost you every sale that reaches it.

**Payment methods are tested end to end.** Don't just confirm the payment gateway is "connected" — run actual test transactions to confirm money moves correctly and order confirmations are sent as expected.

**Shipping and tax calculations are correct.** Incorrect shipping costs or tax calculations shown at checkout are one of the fastest ways to lose a customer's trust right at the final step.

**Order confirmation and shipping emails work.** Customers expect immediate confirmation after purchase. Test that these emails actually arrive, are not landing in spam, and contain correct order details.

**Security and trust signals are visible.** An SSL certificate (the padlock in the browser bar) is essential, and visible trust signals — clear return policies, contact information, and secure payment badges — measurably reduce checkout abandonment.

**Site search actually works well.** For stores with more than a handful of products, a search bar that returns relevant, accurate results is often more important to conversions than the homepage design.

**Return and refund policies are clear and easy to find.** Uncertainty about returns is a common reason shoppers abandon a purchase. A clear, easy-to-find policy reduces hesitation at checkout.

**Page speed is genuinely fast, especially on product pages.** Slow-loading product images and pages directly hurt both conversions and search rankings — this matters even more for ecommerce than for a typical business website.

**Analytics and conversion tracking are set up before launch, not after.** Set up analytics and any ad conversion tracking before your first sale, not after — otherwise you lose valuable early data about how customers are actually finding and buying from you.

A successful ecommerce launch isn't about having every feature imaginable on day one — it's about making sure the core experience of finding a product, trusting the store, and completing checkout is smooth and reliable before you start driving traffic to it.
